How to Measure a Box
Box dimensions are always listed in this order: Length x Width x Height (L x W x H). All measurements are inside dimensions, and typically measured in inches.
- Length — The longest side of the opening
- Width — The shorter side of the opening
- Height — The depth of the box
To find the right box size, measure the longest, widest, and tallest dimensions of your item, then add at least 1/8" to each dimension for padding and cushioning material.
Corrugated Box Types
Regular Slotted Container (RSC)
The most common box style. All flaps are the same length, and the two outer flaps meet at the center. Ideal for shipping, storage, and general packaging.
Half-Slotted Container (HSC)
Similar to RSC but without the top flaps. Used for tray-style packaging where the top needs to remain open or a separate lid is used.
Full-Overlap Slotted Container (FOL)
Top and bottom flaps fully overlap, providing extra strength for heavy or fragile items. Commonly used for bulk cargo and heavy-duty shipping.
Fold-Over Corrugated (Sheet)
A single piece of corrugated that folds over the product. Used for protecting flat items like artwork, mirrors, and signage.
Corrugated Board Grades
| Grade | Burst Strength | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|
| Single Wall (32 ECT) | 200# | Light items, retail packaging |
| Single Wall (44 ECT) | 275# | General shipping, medium-weight items |
| Double Wall (48 ECT) | 350# | Heavy items, bulk shipping |
| Double Wall (61 ECT) | 500# | Very heavy items, industrial packaging |
| Triple Wall | 700#+ | Extreme heavy-duty, pallet-sized crating |
ECT (Edge Crush Test) measures the stacking strength of corrugated board. Burst Strength (#) measures resistance to puncturing. Higher numbers mean stronger boxes.

Choosing the Right Box
Consider these factors when selecting your box:
- Weight of contents — Heavier items need double-wall or high-ECT boxes
- Fragility — Fragile items benefit from double-wall construction and extra cushioning
- Shipping distance — Longer distances require stronger boxes to withstand handling
- Stacking requirements — If boxes will be stacked high, choose higher ECT ratings
- Size — Choose a box that fits your item snugly to minimize movement and reduce void fill
