A practical guide to pallet rack planning

Start with the loads you store and the movement your operation needs. This builder helps visualize a starting arrangement and assemble a parts list; final design decisions belong with qualified rack professionals.

Know the system parts

Frames are the vertical end structures; beams connect frames and support each load level. Wire decks, row spacers, column guards and anchors are selected to suit the application. Always verify that beam connectors and frame profiles are compatible.

Size around the load

Measure the pallet including overhang, its loaded height and weight, and the handling equipment. Choose depth and beam span for the actual unit load, then account for flue spaces, sprinkler clearances and safe lift-truck operation.

Starter bays and add-ons

A starter bay uses two frames with beam pairs at each level. Adding a bay in a continuous row typically shares the intermediate frame, rather than duplicating a complete starter bay. Confirm counts for the selected system and all end conditions.

Rows, aisles and traffic

Parallel rows can improve storage density, but aisle dimensions depend on trucks, turning radius, pallet handling and egress. The visual separates rows by the selected aisle width; it is not a scaled floor plan or traffic-clearance approval.

Galvanized and demanding settings

Moisture, washdown, temperature, chemicals and outdoor exposure affect finish selection. Galvanized components may be appropriate in some environments, but coating suitability and connections should be reviewed for the specific conditions.

Custom finishes and ratings

Special colors, higher-duty frames, unusual beam spans or load ratings may require a reviewed configuration. A catalog preview does not establish a system capacity. Share load details and operating conditions so a specialist can confirm appropriate components.

Installation and ongoing safety

Install only from approved plans and manufacturer instructions. Anchor and plumb frames as specified, protect rack from impact, post the approved load plaques, train operators and inspect regularly. Damaged components should be unloaded and evaluated by a qualified person.

From visual plan to real order
